Southwest Warrior

Portrait of a woman wearing a feathered headdress, with colorful geometric patterns across her face and clothing, against a desert landscape and a bright sun.

Medium: Acrylic | Year 2024 | Honorable Mention

This painting began with a question: What should we guard most fiercely against the test of time, when everything else fades away. And Whom do we trust to protect it?

That question led me to another: Does the land protect us, or do we protect the land? Who then is the warrior?

We seek shelter in caves, under trees, and beneath rocky ledges. The land offers us protection, yet we also stand to protect land we hold sacred. Through Southwest Warrior, I explore that relationship and ask where the role of protector begins, and whether it ever belongs to only one.
