Learning to Let Go

Acrylic portrait of a man in profile wearing a wolf headdress, with blue and white face markings.

Medium: Acrylic | Year: 2021

Created in 2021, this was my first painting of a person. Having only one large paintbrush, I turned to everyday objects to complete the painting: a comb and toothbrush for the wolf’s fur, a thumbtack for fine detail, and a cotton swab and sponge to help apply the paint.

Many tears went into this piece. Because I have difficulty seeing color, I struggled to judge the correctness of the skin tone and often wondered if I was getting it right. Yet the hardest part was knowing when to stop and let the painting be finished, even with uncertainty still lingering.
